Historical Notes: Elizabeth Atkinson did not come to New Zealand herself, although six of her children, including Premier Sir Harry Atkinson, settled in New Zealand. She was the daughter of William and Fanny Smith, who manufactured "curiously strong peppermints". She was the wife of John Atkinson, an English architect and builder, whose portrait was donated with this one.
