Historical Notes: Four prospectors, James de Pontus (or Pontius), Felix Mathieu, James Dudley and John Kempthorne, were murdered for the 300 pounds in gold dust they were carrying on the Maungatapu track near Nelson in 1866. The murderers, Richard Burgess, Thomas Kelly, Philip Levy and Joseph Sullivan were caught and all except Sullivan, who turned Queen's evidence, were executed.
