Steam locomotive 453, N class, type 2-6-2, built by Baldwin in 1891. Photograph taken after 1908 by Albert Percy Godber. Location unknown. Dated from the fact that the number 453 is on the cab door, and this number was given when New Zealand Railways purchased the Wellington & Manawatu Railway Co. in 1908. This image is a copy negative made by Godber of a print in his album (Vol 108, p 33 (PA1-q-101))

Historical Notes: This engine was built in 1891 (maker's No 12104/91) for the Wellington & Manawatu Railway Company, No. 9. Company purchased by NZR in 1908, and the locomotive renumbered "N" class 453. It was written off on the 13th of November 1926. (Information from the `Register of New Zealand Steam Locomotives 1863-1971' by W G Lloyd, 1974, page 62, and `Cavalcade of New Zealand locomotives' by A N Palmer and W W Stewart (1965).
