Historical Notes: Four prospectors, Felix Mathieu, James Dudley, John Kempthorne, and James de Pontius, were waylaid and murdered by Richard Burgess, Thomas Kelly, Philip Levy and Joseph Sullivan on the Maungatapu track outside Nelson in 1866. The murderers stole their gold dust valued at 300 pounds.

Inscriptions: Inscribed - Mount verso - Mr Felix Matthews (crossed out and replaced with Mathieu) victim of Maungatapu. The dog of Mr Price a stepson of Mr Matthews found Kempthorne's hat and so led to discovery of the bodies.
