Historical Notes: Photograph probably taken by William Leonard Williams, who was living in nearby Waikahua cottage, close to the Cook landing site, in early November 1865. It could have been taken before he left the district just prior to the battle at Waerenga-a-hika, or, as is more likely, when he returned in February 1866. (information from Sheila Robinson, Gisborne Museum & Arts Centre. See AT 13/12/4, 27/8/90)
