Historical Notes: The construction of Hataitai Park was one of the work relief schemes in Wellington during the depression of the early 1930s. It was organised under the Unemployment Board's Scheme Five by which the Government provided the money and local bodies provided the jobs and the tools. The park was constructed at the same time as the Mount Victoria Tunnel. Much of the spoil from the tunnel was used as fill for the park
