Historical Notes: This house was built ca 1879 for Mr W L Rees, and bought by A R Watson in 1882. Watson did extensive work to the grounds, leveling, terracing and planting. Watson died in 1911 and his estate including this house was inherited by his son, Alexander Richardson Dickie Watson, who died in 1917, leaving no natural family. After the First world War the house was used as a convalescent home for wounded soldiers, and in 1934 was partly destroyed by fire. It was demolished in about 1936. (Information from Watson's great great nephew, Doug Bolitho, August 2008. Watson's obituary can be found in the New Zealand Herald for 30 October 1911.)
