The masts of the French vessels Astrolabe and Zelee visible beyond a coastal area with windswept trees. In the foreground are a partially ruined hut, its roof protected with canvas, and a further makeshift tent. Two men are using an astronomical instrument on a tripod in the centre of the view and two other men are climbing a hill to the right.
