Kowhaiwhai patterns. No. 1: 'Pitau a Manaia; from the Maitu facial boards of 'Te Poho o Rawiri' a house erected at Kaiti, Gisborne about the year 1849. The maihi are now deposited in the Dominion Museum'. No 2: 'Puhoro; this was the pattern of all the heke (rafters) of the same house. The house was 'restored' about 1896, when the rafters & ridge pole were scraped and adorned with a poor pattern which was reproduced from a Otenui cut out of linoleum. These are in the Dom. Mus. some 'heke' from the church at Manutuke with this pattern - large but not well executed'. No. 3 'Mangopare. The pattern of the Tauhuhu of same house' (Transcriptions from Williams' notes in the front of the volume).
