Historical Notes: The Tosho-gu Shrine was built in 1616-1617 as the mausoleum or mortuary temple of the Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu (1542-1616). Ieyasu was the first Shogun of the Edo period (1603-1868) of Japanese history. Edo is the old name for Tokyo.
