Historical Notes: A Mrs Mary Whelan [sic in Wise's from 1890-1903; thereafter Whalan] farmed at Taieri beach from about 1890, according to Wise's directories. By 1909, Alex, Edward and John Whalan were also there. Mary Ellen Macdonald married Patrick (Peter) Whelan in 1860 and they farmed at Taieri. Edward Whalan was their son. The spelling of the surname appears to have changed in the later nineteenth century.
