Historical Notes: Caption from the New Zealand Free Lance reads: "Biggest hydro-electric project in New Zealand to date is at Benmore where the Waitaki River is to be harnessed. Part of the work is shown in this picture. On the far bank can be seen diversion culverts and in the centre foreground is the excavation for the watertight core of the huge earth dam. The dam will eventually occupy all the valley visable upstream left of the bridge and will extend back, out of the picture, over the culverts."
