A group of seated and standing Maori in an open grassed area. Two wharenui on the left, with a low dwelling on the right. A woman is tending to a fire on the right. The marae is surrounded by a palisade, with an opening, flanked by a single cabbage tree. Rata or pohutukawa trees are massed on a low hill to the left beyond the houses. The scene is likely to be in the upper North Island
