Drawing for the title page of Punch or the Wellington Charivari, Volume 1, 1868. Mr Punch, clad in suit and top hat, a mere over his arm, is brandishing a pen. He is watched disapprovingly by a soldier (Von Tempsky's self-portrait?), a businessman, a lawyer, a clergyman and another Maori man clad in native dress. His dog, a ruff around its neck, and his palette, are at his feet. A cauldron marked 'Society' is bubbling on the right.
