In the foreground are several resting Forest Rangers, one standing on guard duty with his rifle, guarding two Maori men, two women and a child amongst ferns or bracken. A further group of Rangers and prisoners is standing in a shallow valley in the middle distance.

Historical Notes: Probably drawn while von Tempsky and his company were stationed at the Redoubt for several months until June 1864
