Historical Notes: Ngati Porou leader, soldier, farmer, politician and assessor. Died at Gisborne on the 1st of July 1897. Given name was Rapata, but later often known as Ropata as this is how his name sounded when spoken by Scotsman Donald McLean. Ropata preferred the new pronunciation as it did not recall his childhood slavery
