The new year (1882) as a young child coming in through a window, surmounted with bells. The old year moves out, watched by a young woman, possibly Maori. Below in miniature is 'A souvenir 1881' with incidents from the year, including the wreck of S. S. Tararua, A Chinese man lying under a weight marked 'Oppression', Commerce as a man bowing beneath another weight marked 'Depression' and a soldier saying 'Move on' to a seated Maori, a reference to the Parihaka Incident of 1881. A couplet under the title is mostly missing because the base of the page is torn.
