Historical Notes: William Barnard Rhodes was involved with the purchase of lands in Waikanae, Porirua and Wellington from the Te Ati Awa and Ngati Toa tribes. Many of these purchases were later disputed by the tribes concerned. Rhodes had also invested heavily in trading and whaling operations in the Kapiti and Wellington districts as well as Northland.
