Inscriptions: Inscribed - Recto - beneath image: Wei Tongata Waiwakaiho Taranaki N. Z.; Verso - This is a portrait of one of the oldest Maories in Taranaki. I have frequently been to his Whare or hut & I found him the best disposed & good natured Native i ever met with. A friend accompanied me on my last visit & took his likeness. The old man seemed much pleased & looked first in a looking glass & then at his portrait & said it was good. A. Shelley March 15 57 [in pencil]. Received June 12 / 1857 [in ink, possibly in another hand]
