Historical Notes: Robley notes on the back of the painting that in order to paint Te Kuka, he had to give him rum and tobacco so that he would sit for a minute. He also states that the crowd of Maori around them were astonished at the exact depiction of Te Kuka's tattoos. The note says that Te Kuka was a carver of note, who carved a stick for [Robley].
