Reference Number: MSR-05-f027v
Leaf from Boethius' treatise on music.Manion notes "The most striking of these embellishments is on f.27v (fig. 8) where the numerical table and proportional diagrams are framed by an elephant supporting twin towers, with soldiers' heads and spears peeping over battlements that help to suggest the topmost curve of the diagram. The diagram so framed is a summary illustrating the application of all the preceding mathematics to musical proportions, which is the principal subject of the treatise".
