Leaf from Boethius' treatise on music.Manion notes "Set on azure grounds within an ochre band, they [decorated initials] are composed of vegetal, interlace and zoomorphic motifs in which the winged dragon features prominently. Great use is made of the vellum itself in the designs with black outlines and occasional use of thin gold strips contrasting with the delicately stroked shading of contours and washed grounds in red, green and ochre."
