According to the accompanying text "Our illustration is taken from the hills north of the harbour, a few miles from the port, and above the line of railway connecting it with Dunedin". A man is standing on a piece of open ground amongst bush, looking towards the township of Port Chalmers and the harbour entrance. There are several sailing and steam vessels in the harbour.
