Two groups of French sailors assisted by Maori hauling fishing lines in from the sea at Kororareka (Russell). Other French sailors are chatting to Maori women. The accompanying text from LaPlace's text (Volume 4 p. 46) describes the local Maori as being importunate in attempting to acquire powder, shot and biscuits from the sailors; and all the local young women distracting the sailors from their fishing by running in front of them. The view looks along the beach to the west, to bush-clad hills beyond.
