The sailing ship `Mataura' at Port Chalmers, taken by David Alexander De Maus between 1874 and 1875. Dated from "Sailing ships of the New Zealand Shipping Co." by Alan Bott, where this photograph is reproduced (p 127) and which says this photograph must have been taken after the name was changed to Mataura, but before she had been painted in the NZSCo. colours.

Historical Notes: The `Mataura' was built in 1868, and was formerly known as the `Dunfillan'. She was purchased by the New Zealand Shipping Company in 1874, fitted with Haslam's Patent Freezing Machinery and took the second cargo of frozen meat from New Zealand in 1882. She was later sold and renamed `Alida'
