Sailing ship 'Mataura' alongside the wharf at Port Chalmers. The funnel for the refrigeration plant is clearly visible in the image. Taken by David Alexander De Maus between 1874-1889.

Historical Notes: The 'Mataura' was built in 1868, and was launched as the 'Dunfillan'. She was purchased by the New Zealand Shipping Company in 1874. She was fitted with Haslam's Patent Air-dry Refrigerator and took the second cargo of frozen meat from New Zealand in 1882. She was later sold and renamed the 'Alida'.
