Wiremu Kingi te Kaitara, shown half-length, seated at a table and facing the viewer. He is wearing a blue jacket over a red scarf or jacket and a white shirt and black necktie, along with a naval-type peaked cap. On his left hand are a flax and kiwi-feather cloak and a paddle with painted kowhaiwhai designs on it. The portrait was almost certainly painted at St John's College, Purewa (Meadowbank, Auckland) during Tamihana te Raupara's time there as a student.
