E hoa, e Te Marini [Makarini],

Tena koe. Tenei ano taku kupu ki a koe, kua whakaturia e matou a Waitotara. Kua tuhituhi ahau i taku pukapuka ki a Te Ture mo nga utu, kia ono pauna tene hereni. He tikanga aroha enei na matou mo nga pirihi, mo Pakeha kia noho, he kaitiaki mo te waka. Heoi ano.

Friend, McLean,

Greetings. My message to you is that we have a proposal for Waitotara. I have written a letter to Durie for the payments, to be six pounds ten shillings. This is a consideration from us for the policemen, for the Pakeha to stay to guard the canoe. That's all.
