E hoa, e Te Makarini,

Tena ra ko koe. Ka nui toku whakaaro ki a koe. Tena koe.

E hoa, kia rongo mai koe, he nui toku raruraru ki Taranaki mo nga kau a Te Kati, kua hereherea i nga Maori o Kaihihi. Ka nui te raruraru, he nui taku mahi. Tenei ano te tikanga o te raruraru. Ko nga kau a Te Kati, koia tenei ko taku mahi whakariterite. Heoi ano.

E hoa, he aha koe te whakahoki mai ai i taku pukapuka? Kia mohio ai au, engari mau e tuhi mai ki au tetahi tikanga. Ka nui enei marama ka pahemo ake nei, kahore ano tetahi pukapuka au i tae mai ki au. Koia ka roa ai taku rapunga ki a koe.

Tena koe, e hoa, e Makarini, tena koe. Ka nui toku aroha atu ki a koe. Heoi ano taku korero.

Friend, McLean,

Greetings to you there. I am thinking a lot of you. Greetings.

Friend, listen, I've considerable trouble in Taranaki over Te Kati's cows, which have been caught by the Maori of Kaihihi. There's been great trouble and I've been very busy with it. This is the reason for the trouble - Te Kati's cows, and it's my job to sort it out. Enough of that.

Friend, why have you not replied to my letter? So I can know, write to me with a reason. Many months have passed, and not one letter has come to me from you. And this has delayed my seeking you out.

Greetings, friend, McLean, greetings to you. I have great affection for you. That's all I have to say to you.
