Historical Notes: Note from Mr G Mew (October 2000): Marseilles tiles are thought to have been used in a Dunedin house in 1898. The "New Zealand tablet" for about June 1898 has an advertisement for Marseilles tiles, and the name of the company associated with them was Thompson & Bridger (a large Dunedin timber and hardware company). However, it seems that Briscoes very quickly became the sole agent after that.
