Kua whakaae a Te Kawana ki a koe, kia haere mai koe ki konei kia rongo i nga tikanga o to utu i Taranaki, i Tapuaeruru, i Oakura, i Wairau, i Hauranga, i Tataraimaka, i Katikara. Otira, e tama, ko te whakaaenga o nga tangata o konei i aua kainga ano, kia tango hoki matou i nga utu o aua kainga. Heoi ano.

[Friend - crossed out] Young man, McLean, greetings.
Young man,

The Governor has agreed that you come here to hear the conditions regarding your payment for Taranaki, Tapuaeruru, Oakura, Wairau, Hauranga, Tataraimaka, and Katikara. However, young man, the agreement of the people here for those lands is that we take the payments for them. That's all.

'Jan 8 1849

Te Kara and and others wishing Mr McLean to come over to Nelson to state particulars of land bought at Taranaki and other places and wishing to receive payments for their claims there.'
