E hoa, e Makarini,

Tena ra koe. Ka nui taku aroha ki a koe, no te mea kua rite o mahi aroha mo nga tangata Maori, kia whakarangatiratia ai matou ki te ritenga o to koutou aroha, no konei ka tuhituhi atu ahau ki a koe, ki taku hoa e aroha nei ahau. Tenei ano taku inoinga ki te Atua mou, a mo aku matua kaiwhakaako.

E hoa, ka tae atu taku pukapuka ki a koe, mau hoki e tuhituhi mai kia au. Heoi ano.

Greetings to you. I have great love for you because of your good deeds for the Maori people, which elevate us through the practice of your love, and thus I write to you, my friend whom I love. And my prayer to God is for you and for my elder teachers.

Friend, when my letter reaches you, then write back to me. That is all.
