The earliest entries describe a meeting with Ngati Apa and Ngati Ruanui about Rangitikei. McLean then travelled down the coast to Wellington where he spent several days on official meetings, including meetings with Governor Grey. On the way back he describes a big meeting with Ngati Toa about land at Waikanae and then describes a journey up the Manawatu and on to central Hawkes Bay, with descriptions of his journey, people met and meetings held.
