The diary begins and ends with notes mainly relating to Maori songs and accounts recorded by McLean on this travels. The diary itself contains descriptions of land purchase activity around Wanganui and a journey up the Whanganui River. Later entries describe negotiations about Rangitikei and Manawatu land. People and kainga visited are described.
