English (E Ma)

Friend, McLean,

Greetings to you and your people of Ngamotu, Puketapu and Waitara, and of Ihaia Tipene and the others.

Your letter came to me on the 9th of November but when we read it I, we, did not have any ideas. McLean, now what I and my people will do is put before you and the Governor our proposal. We will not take it back, we agree. It is for you and Ihaia to approve your idea. Write so I will know the outcome of your discussion.

Young man, I have given over my land to the Governor. After you left, he said one important thing: Would you refuse the daughters of a man? But there is just one a man desires, that good woman, Waitara; however, my thought was that Waitara is for McLean.
