22nd Hepetema 1852

E hoa, e Te Makarini,

Tenei taku kupu atu ki a koe. E mea ana au mau pea e whakarite mai tetehi kake tupeka maku. Otira, haunga koe mau ia e ki atu ki a Te Kawana, ma[na?] e whakarite mai ki a koe kia homai ranei, aua ranei. Otira, ki te mea ia e kore e pai ki tenei kupu aku, me tuhi mai e koe ki a au, kia rongo au. E kore ia e pai ki te homai tupeka maku, otira me ko nga tangata o konei, kua whakaae atu a Kawana ki ta ratou kupu. Otira e mea ana ano hoki au, kei a koe ano hoki tetehi. Heoti ano.

Friend, McLean,

This is what I have to say to you. I am thinking that perhaps you would arrange a cake of tobacco for me. But if not you, then speak to the Governor about him arranging for you to give me some or not. However, if he does not agree to this request of mine, then write to me so I will know. If he does not agree to give me tobacco, then the Governor may agree to the request from the people here. All the same I think that you have some with you. That's all.
