E hoa, e Kawana,

He kupu taku ki a koe mo taku pukapuka i tuhituhia e au i mua, i whakakahoretia e nga tangata o Patea, o Waitotara mo taku tohenga kia utua aua whenua, kia tango ai au i nga utu.

Friend, Governor,

A word to you about my letter I wrote to you earlier concerning the people of Patea and Waitotara objecting to my persisting about payment for those lands, and that I take the payments. Friend, I still persist because I have the ancestral claim to the land, and they, they are mere chicks on the land. Now, the claim on the land is from my ancestors; from Wairerekura it came down to me from his occupation of it.
