Whārangi 1 o te 2. Tiro i te āhua taumira teitei
Inform Mr. Fox that Mr. McLean was sent down by His Excellency, the Governor-in-Chief, from Taranaki, to carry on the negotiations for the acquisition of the Manawatu and Wairarapa districts, on account of the N.Z. Co., in consequence of my having informed His Excellency of the arrangements which had been made between this Government and Mr. Fox, on the subject; as proposed in your communication of the 22nd. September 1849, and accepted in his of the 24th. September 1849; and again referred to in Mr. Fox's letter of the 4th, December 1849; which last was at once transmitted to the Governor-in-Chief in original, and so that I cannot now refer to the exact terms made use of.
Mr. McLean has come down for the purpose of paying the Second Instalment due to the Natives on account of the Rangitikei purchase; and has been detained from concluding that payment, and proceeding to those other negotiations entrusted to him, in consequence of the N.Z. Company having failed to provide the sum

required for that purpose.
Mr. McLean has also, both on his way down from Taranaki, and since his arrival at Wellington, been giving his constant attention to all questions relating to the lands in which the New Zealand Company are interested; more especially in reference to those at Taranaki, Manawatu and Wairarapa; relative to all of which subjects for discussion or enquiry, are constantly occurring; as the natives of the different districts are so connected with one another, that it often happens that the claimants most interested in a place are not those residing there, but others living at a distance.
20th. June 1850.
