11 1/2p.m. 20th. February 1870.
My dear Col.
The Despatch from Mair has just come in, and I send it on; also a paper and official received this afternoon from Maketu.
Gascoigne, with 50 men, has arrived since I wrote this morning; also 4 pack-horses, and 600 lbs. biscuit.
We must do something about the article in the paper addressed to you, which I opened. I can see by the address, it is a feigned hand, and intended as a trust, from someone. I have shewn it to all the Officers. They are most indignant, and think that some steps ought to be taken to contradict the falsehoods with which it is filled. Now don't do anything rashly about it. Wait till I see you.
Very truly yours, (Signed)
Jn. I. Canning.
