Wi Pere.

It is well-known to all the Europeans of Poverty Bay, of the way he acted at the last War; also when he and the other natives were following in the ex-prisoners' rear, that he received from Te Kooti, money and tobacco, to be shared amongst the different Tribes; and I can vouch that the portion of the Ngati Maru Tribe that came to reinforce us at Paparatu, the day we were repulsed, were the worse for liquer; and some had bottles of grog purchased with the money shared to them.
