My dear Kemp,

I was glad to see by your letter that you had completed the work at Manawatu and after completion of surveys a final report can be made. I am much surprised to hear of your intention to go in for election at the Bay of Islands you are just doing what Carleton must be very thankful to you for by injuring McLeod's chances which are quite safe otherwise, I trust you will at once see the folly of pursuing this course

and give your support to McLeod, I feel sure you have been acting under a misapprehension in going in at the 11th hour besides I do not see how it could benefit yourself as of course it debars you from receiving any office of emolument while you are a member.

On your own account I would strongly impress upon you to withdraw. Yours sincerely,
Donald McLean
