I have the honor to forward the enclosed letter from te Waru to Tamihana who brought it down yesterday afternoon, after my messenger had left for Napier.

It appears that a Native named "Wharekura" who has been living at Waikare-Taheke (but who from not having taken the oath of allegiance has been afraid to come down to Town) has a relation among the exprisoners, and wishing to get him away, went up to the rebels camp a day or two previous to the fight at Puketapu for that purpose, (I made mention of this in a former letter) he has now been up a second time and returned to Waikare-Taheke having been again unsuccessful, and has made the following statement to te Waru.

"That the rebels have been joined by 70 men namely Himionas and Rakinas people together with a few from Turanga that they are well armed are living upon Potatos, berries fern root fern trees and what pigs they can catch, have made a strong Pa on Puketapu hill, intend staying there and are clearing potato grounds and intend to right if the Europeans wish it".

As I did not think the account quite clear as to the clear as to the supply of Potatos I have sent a message up to te Waru to bring down the Native "Wharekura" at once and on his arrival here I will again communicate with you on the subject.

I have the honor to be
Sir Yours most obt. servt.
S. Deighton R.M.
