COPY. Napier

10th. December 1868.

Sir,

I have the honour to inform you that it is rumoured in Napier that the Ngatiporou, serving in the advanced position before the enemy, were obliged to retire, owing to want of ammunition and supplies.

I shall feel obliged if you will let me know the exact state of the case, showing what supplies and ammunition the Friendly natives had the day they retired, and what steps were taken to keep up a supply, and if the field force were actually obliged to return for want of good food and ammunition.

I have the honour to be Sir, Your most obedient servant (Signed)
Donald McLean.
To:- Major Westrupp Commanding Colonial Forces Turanganui.
