NEW ZEALAND GOVERNMENT ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH. To:- Donald McLean
Wellington August 30th. 1868

Despatch from Deighton dated Friday reports scouting party delayed by floods but started. Capt. Saunders accompanied Expedition. This will ensure bodies of our killed being properly looked to if possible. Hapimana had reported Deighton large fires seen again near Tuhi. Weiroa natives have no doubt enemy still at Puke Tapu as scouts report cannot now be here till Wednesday. I shall not wait for it. I have done all can be done here meanwhile Deighton still reports Wairoa natives very funky. Says he does not believe they would stand.
