My Dear McLean

Just as I was on the point of leaving Auckland I heard a report that a certain vagabond from Hokianga had bought some cannisters of Gunpowder from the natives there and taken them to Auckland with the virtuous intent of lay an information against your humble servant for powder selling - I shall not know any more about it till I get home but think it probable that he has bought some of that powder which I let the natives have some months ago as you know with the Governors permission - it is quite unnecessary to say that no other has been sold or disposed of by me, except to enable you to affirm on my part that I do say so, in case of any enquiry in the matter, which I hope you will do. I am really sick of the very name of Gunpowder and have not had a charge in my possession since that which was delivered as you are aware under permission to the natives for the rest, I utterly despise and defy all and sundry scoundrels who dare to assert that I am capable of breaking any law except perhaps one of the ten commandments.

I am, Ever sincerely yours
F. E. Maning
