Dear Sir,

I shall feel obliged if you will keep me informed of all native movements.

From what I can gather it is most likely if the Hauhaus are not thoroughly beat as I hope and trust they will be at Poverty Bay, that they will pay weak places like Mohaka and Wairoa a visit their hands are too full at present to attempt this --

I remain,
Yours truly,
Donald McLean
Major Lambert is authorized to put 50 Maoris on garrison pay if necessary I should like them to be selected from each party by you in such a manner as not to cause tribal jealousies -- D. McL.
