My dear Sir,
Yours of 22nd. Inst. to hand. I am in hopes you have ere this received the Native petition pretty well signed and certainly without European interference.
We are still quiet. I do not think however the proposed abandonment of the Post at Kohanga Kareareka is at all a prudent measure. I wrote you fully on that matter a few days since. It has since transpired that "Paora te Riri" and his brother "Pohinake" have had communication with one of the Hau Hau (Maaka) who accompanied Andrew Matete's daughter when she brought the letters. They were advised by some to communicate to the Hau Hau here their intention to kokiri six hundred men on Turanga in say September next, one body to attack Tamehana, the other the Muri Wai (WheroWhero). They were, to request them to hold themselves in readiness to join at any moment and in the interim to plant extensively on the road to Reinga. The latter has been done or rather preparations made for so doing. This I have requested the natives to stop and not allow any mutations in that direction. I shall see Capt. Biggs on the matter. The Natives (Tamehana) hold a manga today on this subject and will (at least I have advised them to do) send you aletter containing their views on the
the subject. This threatened irruption may be and very likely is all bounce, but we must not ignore it.
I will write you again as soon as I hear further.
With host wishes,
J. W. Harris.
D McLean Esq
