Copy of Deed, between Nathaniel Reid and Donald McLean for house at Henui, 14th. March 1845.

Agreement entered into this 14th. day of March 1845, between Nathaniel Reid, settler, and Mr. D. McLean, Protector of Aboriginies, both of Taranaki.

It is hereby agreed that the aforesaid N. Reid lets his house at the Henui, with three quarters of an acre of land connected to the said house, to Mr. Donald McLean, for the sum of Eight pounds sterling, per annum; the terms of occupancy to be entirely at Mr. Mc. lean's option - that is, he may leave the said house and land at any time by paying the rent thereof up to the time he leaves; and is also privileged to hold the same house and land as long as he requires it, at the aforesaid rent for 6 months' time; at the expiration of which time the rent will continue the same, provided rents are neither higher nor lower at the settlement. In such case, a further fair addition or reduction will be given, or allowed, taking the present yearly rent as the standard to go by.

Mr. McLean having a prior right of purchase to the aforesaid house and land, on the event of its being sold. It is further agreed that the said N. Reid keep the house in good habitable condition, and will, within the first quarter, floor and ceil it; also build

a chimney to the outer kitchen, which is to be covered in properly before the ensuing wet season.
