9 April 1867

My dear Maclean,

Mr. Felix Wakefield (brother of the original Wakefield whom you knew) asks me for a letter of introduction to you. I have no doubt he will get plenty from Stafford and others -

He I think would like employment in any way in giving opinions, reporting, designing or carrying out engineering works - I daresay his opinion as to your harbour and its capabilities for improvement or otherwise - would be valuable. He is a man of general ability - and I fancy great activity of mind - and has been a good deal about the world - with an eye, mostly or always, to his profession. Such a man could not fail to pick up many ideas in addition to those given by routine education or apprenticeship. He no doubt will speak for himself as to actual works he has been engaged in -

I hope you get on comfortably with your natives. I went to the Com C.L.D. officially the other day about a Grant to Tauha (?) of the road between Napier Town and Colenso (s old place or somewhere there - A certificate of ownership was sent to be exchanged for a Grant - without any mention of reservation of the road - Of course the Act gives the power to take a road for 10 years - but this might not be agreeable to the Maori gtees if not forewarned - But I daresay Carter will consult you - and that you will settle the matter so as to have the Road reserved in the Grant, I am holding back the Grant till I hear from you.

Strang looking jolly -
Yours ever truly
Alfred Domett
D. Maclean Esqr.
