Letter from H.T. Kemp to Donald McLean Esq. dated 18th. January 1857

COPY PRIVATE Waimate Bay of Islands
18th. January 1857

My dear McLean,

I drop a hurried line on the eve of another journey, to ask you, to be so kind as to cause the Contingent money to be forwarded, as soon as it can be procured. Besides what I have myself advanced, there are parties waiting to be paid, and I think they have given good credit. The Government will find it much to their advantage to make small advances in the shape of a little ready money. It is very difficult to raise cash in these inland places; and nothing is to be done without the hard stuff, especially where the natives are concerned.

I hope you will do the best you can, and you will know that I would not trouble, if I were not really obliged.

Believe me yours very sincerely (Signed)
H.T. Kemp.
